Our Story

Medications Expert

We help you get better health and reduce medication side effects by matching medicines to your genes.Right Med Right Dose was founded by Katrina Azer, a New Zealand registered Pharmacist. As a patient, she experienced severe adverse effects from medicines. Led by her curiosity, she went on a journey of discovery to find the answer."Why do patients repond differently to medicines?"And...."How is it that two people can take the same medicine, at the same dose and can get a totally different response, ranging from severe side effects to the medicine not working for them as well as it should?"After two years of searching, she found that the answer is in our unique genetic makeup. Our genes determine our response to medicines. And because our genetic makeup is different, the same ‘one-size fits all’ dose does not work for every person. This field of study is known as pharmacogenetics or personalized medicine.Pharmacogenomics is the field of study that looks at how your genes affect the way you respond to medicines. Just like everyone's fingerprints are unique, everyone's genes are different too. This means that the same medicine might work differently for different people. In 2022, Katrina combined her patient experience with her expertise in medicines as an award-winning industry-leading pharmacist, and qualified as a Certified Pharmacogenomics consultant.
She built Right Med Right Dose to offer Pharmacogenomic services to patients in New Zealand.
--------------Our goal is to personalize your medicines to suit your genes. By testing your genes through a simple cheek swab test, we recommed the best medicine, at the right dose for your genes. This way, you can avoid taking medicines that might not work or that could have negative side effects. We want every patient to have access to this test so that they get medicines that work for them, reduce side effects and lead a better, healthier life.

What does a pharmacogenomics (PGx) consultation involve?

The results of a pharmacogenomics test show how your genes respond to medicines.
The Pharmacogenomics Test & Consultation package includes:
○ A cheek swab test kit
ASSESSMENT - A video appointment with you, an hour of expert analysis of your test results and detailed medication history.
EVALUATION - We evaluate the appropriateness and use of your medicines and identify any medication-related problems.
PLAN - We design a medication plan that ensures you get the right medicines for you, which also includes lifestyle recommendations that can help improve your health.
FOLLOW-UP - We share a detailed letter explaining your test results to your healthcare provider with recommendations from the plan we agreed on.

Cost - $299 - $399*
*Depending on number of medications tested

What does the test process involve?

A PGx test is simple and painless.
The DNA test kit takes a sample from your cheek cells using a cheek swab.
Each PGx DNA test kit contains:
• Instructions for taking a sample using a cheek swab
• Two test swabs
• A lab test form that I help you complete
• Prepaid envelopes

Who should get a Pharmacogenomics consultation?

This service suits you if you:
• take 5 or more medicines
• experience side effects or reactions to medicines
• are looking beyond the 'one-size fits all' approach

• experience frequent hospital admissions
• are experiencing treatment failure, or frequent medication changes
• want to personalize your medicines
• want Proactive healthcare that avoids medicine-related problems and side effects now and in the future

This is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME test - the results do not change for the rest of your life, as your DNA does not change.

○ get the best results from your current medicines
○ know if any of your medications work against each other
○ reduce side effects from your medications
○ find out what lifestyle steps you can take to improve your health condition alongside your medicines

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pharmacogenomics (Pgx)?

Pharmacogenomics is an area of precision or personalized medicine that matches medicines to each patient based on their unique genetic makeup, lifestyle, and environment. By looking at your genes, or your DNA, we can predict which medications are most likely to be effective and which might cause side effects for you.
Personalized prescribing of medicines leads to better health outcomes. It helps you get better faster, with fewer side effects and saves money by reducing extra doctor visits and medical costs.

What is the PGx consultation process?

Once you complete the 'Book a Consultation' form, we will contact you to discuss the process. You will be sent some initial screening and consent forms to complete, followed by the test kit.Once you complete the test, you will send it to the lab in the prepaid envelope provided. The turnaround for results is 2-3 weeks. We receive the results and analyze them based on your medical history and the information you provided us.Then we work out a 'medicines plan' and discuss this with you to make sure it aligns with your health needs and other factors that affect your health such as your lifestyle. This plan is communicated to your doctor. This process is centred around your health needs and looks beyond your medications. It focuses on your health goals, and mental & physical well-being, rather than relying solely on medicines.
We work with you to prioritise your health goals and personalize your treatment plan to get the best health outcomes.

The Evidence that supports
Pharmacogenomics (PGX)

A growing body of evidence is supporting the adoption of Pharmacogenomics in clinical practice. The Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) provides peer-reviewed, updated guidelines with actionable recommendations for specific gene variants detected in patients. As well as drug-gene interactions, certain medications can affect metabolizing enzymes causing a phenomenon called Phenoconversion. This causes drug-drug-gene interactions and adds to the complexity. Pharmacists are best placed to implement PGx into clinical practice because they have an extensive knowledge base in the pharmacology of drug interactions and can provide medication recommendations that take these types of interactions into account.Below are some links and references for recent evidence supporting PGx.Do not hesitate to get in touch if you wish to discuss this further.
